This book is sacred in an unusual way––rather than collecting only religious poetry as the title may suggest, editor Stephen Mitchell has instead curated what he calls “poems of fulfillment.” Alongside Lao Tzu and the Book of Psalms are Rilke and Yeats, and a dozen others spanning the globe and several eras. These poems and excerpts draw from Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and Hindu scriptures and allows them to co-exist with modern 20th c. poetry. Part of our “morning library” of first-thing reads, we think this little book is quite charming and valuable.
